Replace Road Sections

Two contractors provided quotes to replace approximately 20 sections of damaged road. The cost was estimated to be approximately $60,000 and is expected to extend the service life 5-8 years.

The repairs will begin near the mail station and end near the intersection of Tanglewood Dr. and Segura Ridge Rd.

Types of Damage to be Repaired

The single most-damaging pavement defect is cracks, because cracks allow water to penetrate the base beneath the surface. When water gets beneath the surface, it eventually causes greater and more widespread cracking, potholes, and eventually general pavement failure. Research has shown that sealing pavement cracks is the most cost-effective approach to extending the life of a pavement.

Alligator Cracking

The condition of alligator cracking is reached when irregular longitudinal cracks begin to interconnect to form a series of small blocks that resemble an alligator’s skin. This distress is associated with traffic loading and is usually rooted in poor construction, poor drainage, subgrade failure, or the pavement may have just reached the end of its life. If neglected, full-depth distress can be observed when subgrade material is forced up through the surface leading to depressed pavement and an eventual pothole.

Edge Cracking

A crescent shaped, longitudinal edge crack may be an indicator of an unstable road fill, and the fill may be moving downslope. Steep fill slopes are relatively common on Tanglewood.

If fill slope instability is the root cause, repairing the pavement will not address the underlying problem.

This damage mode may also be due to the settling of the underlying material and/or edge loading.
